Wushu: Double delight in Shanghai

WUSHU exponents Khaw Jun Lim and Loh Ying Ting clinched two titles each for Malaysia at last weekend's Asian Junior Championships in Shanghai.

Jun Lim was in sensational form bagging two gold medals in the Boys' Group B (13-15 years) daoshu (broadsword) and changquan (barehands southern style) disciplines.

Ying Ting delivered two more gold in the gunshu (stick) and daoshu disciplines in the Girls' Group B (16-18). The youngster also took a bronze in the changquan event.

Yeap Wai Kin, a double gold medallist at last year's World Youth Championships, failed to make an impact in Shanghai but nonetheless grabbed silver in changquan and qiangshu (spear) and bronze in jiangshu (sword) in the Boys' Group A (16-18).
Malaysia finished with a total of four gold, six silver and seven bronze.

National coach Lim Yew Fai was satisfied with the performance of his charges. It was also Yew Fai's debut outing as a coach after assuming the post early this month.

The 26-year-old, together with Ju Jinyi, handled the exponents for taolu (barehands and weapons) in Shanghai.

"I am happy our exponents returned with medals. They performed up to expectations despite being inexperienced," said Yew Fai, who quit the sport two years ago because of injury. His most memorable performance before his injury was winning a gold medal in qiangshu at the 2005 World Championships in Vietnam.

"Their performance proved that they are on the right track. I believe they have the skills to be successful in the sport," added Yew Fai.

Ex-coach's jail sentence cut to a year

PUTRAJAYA: The Court of Appeal yesterday sentenced former athletics coach C. Ramanathan to 12 months' jail for molesting two junior athletes 19 years ago. A three-man bench led by Datuk Mohd Hishamudin Mohd Yunus unanimously dismissed Ramanathan's appeal against conviction, but varied the jail sentence of four years to a year, which was to run concurrently. Following yesterday's ruling, Ramanathan, 75, a former teacher, walked out a free man as he had served 10 months in Kajang Prison. Convicts get one-third remission for good behaviour while in prison. However, he will lose his pension. Hishamudin, who sat with Datuk Abdul Wahab Patail and Datuk Linton Albert, said the court found no merit to overturn the conviction. "However, in reducing the sentence, we considered Ramanathan's age and the long years the appeal has taken." Deputy public prosecutor Awang Armadajaya Awang Mahmud submitted that then High Court judge Tan Sri Abdull Hamid E...
