KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 27 (Bernama) -- Active politicians should not interfere or get involved in the management of sports associations in the country, said Malaysian Amateur Athletics Association (MAAU) deputy president Karim Ibrahim.
He said that only professionals and those really interested and committed to help promote sports should run sports associations.
Active politicians, bogged down with work in the political arena, would be unable to give much attention to the sports bodies and give of their best, he said in an interview on the "Kerusi Panas" (Hot Seat) programme over Bernama Radio24 Monday.
"When they (politicians) get involved in both politics and sports, self-interest sets in. As such, it is preferable that they focus fully on the agenda of the people as that is more important," he said.
Karim also said that the development of athletics in the country hinged heavily on the cooperation and understanding of many quarters, including parents, coaches, the National Sports Council and the Olympic Council of Malaysia.
