KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 25 (Bernama) -- World number one shuttler Datuk Lee Chong Wei suffered an upset when he was defeated in the men's singles final of the Japan Open badminton championships in Tokyo today by a fourth seeded Chinese player.
Chong Wei's path to victory was halted by China's Chen Long in an hour and 13 minutes match which resulted in the later winning by 21-8, 10-21, 21-19.
The fourth seeded Chen Long advanced to the final after his compatriot and world number two Lin Dan, pulled out of his semifinal yesterday.
Chong Wei who lost tamely in the first game 8-21, put up a sizzling display in the second to win 21-10 but the third game was an evenly contested affair with the lead changing hands as often as the shuttle change.
The Malaysian who was leading 19-18 in the third game failed to take advantage of the situation and allowed Chen Long to claw back to level the score and go on to win the match.
