Malaysian women’s pair stun top Indonesians in the French Open

PETALING JAYA: Budding womens doubles pair of Woon Khe Wei-Vivian Hoo gave their SEA Games chances a major boost when they stunned Meiliana Jauhari-Greysia Polii in the first round of the French Open in Paris yesterday.

The young upcoming pair were highly disappointing in the Denmark Open last week when they lost meekly to Thailand’s Sapsiree Taerattanachai-Savitree Amitapai in the qualifying rounds.

But Khe Wei-Vivian were simply on fire yesterday as they came back from a game down to beat the top Indonesian pair, 18-21, 21-16, 21-15 and move into the second round.

It was their second win over the world No. 8 pair and they will take on either Anneke Feinya Agustin-Nitya Krishinda Maheshwari of Indonesia or Denmark’s Line Damkjaer Kruse-Marie Roepke who played later last night.

However, top Malaysian pair Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty, bowed out in the first round after losing to top seeds Wang Xiaoli-Yu Yang of China.

In men’s singles, world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei was quick to rebound after last week’s final defeat in Denmark to Chen Long.

The 29-year-old Chong Wei brushed past German Marc Zwiebler 21-16, 21-13 to set up a second round clash with local hopeful Brice Leverdez.

Liew Daren also made up for his disappointing performance in Odense by beating Dane Hans-Kristian Vittinghus 21-16, 12-12, 21-13 and will face Chen Long next.

But backup shuttler Mohd Arif Abdul Latif continued to struggle on the international scene after losing in the first qualifying round on Tuesday.

In men’s doubles, fifth seeds Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong nearly suffered another first round exit after slogging for 54 minutes to beat Russians Vladmir Ivanov-Ivan Sozonov 21-23, 21-17, 23-21.

They could yet struggle again when they face Mads Conrad Petersen-Jonas Rasmussen of Denmark next.
Lim Khim Wah-Goh V Shem also had to work hard to before registering a 21-15, 26-28, 21-16 win over world No.13 Naoki Kawamae-Shoji Sato of Japan.

It was their third rubber game match in a row after coming through the qualifiers in similar fashion and will take on top seeds Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng of China for a place in the quarter-finals.

Rajagobal Let Off The Hook

PETALING JAYA, April 24 (Bernama) -- National head coach Datuk K. Rajagobal was let off the hook by the Football Association of Malaysia's (FAM) Disciplinary Committee after finding no evidence that he had violated FAM's Article 88, as claimed. FAM Disciplinary Committee chairman Datuk Taufik Abdul Razak said the committee had decided not to charge Rajagobal after carefully analysing the video of the post-match press conference by the 56-year-old coach. "After listening to the recording of the post-match press conference, we decided to drop the charge against Rajagopal as he did not make such a statement. "Maybe his (Rajagobal) assessment and comments of the match was misconstrued by the media. There was no mention of the FAM policy throughout his comments," said Taufik after emerging from a three-hour Disciplinary Committee meeting at Wisma FAM in Kelana Jaya, here, Wednesday. Rajagobal who does not mince his words when asked to com...
