Chong Wei, Nicol David Kekal Olahragawan, Olahragawati Pulau Pinang

GEORGE TOWN, 29 Nov (Bernama) -- Jaguh badminton Datuk Lee Chong Wei dan ratu skuasy negara Datuk Nicol Ann David pada Isnin dinobat sebagai Olahragawan dan Olahragawati Pulau Pinang 2010 sekaligus mengulangi pencapaian cemerlang mereka selama tiga musim berturut-turut.

Kedua-dua jaguh negara itu bagaimanapun tidak dapat hadir untuk menerima anugerah itu daripada Yang Dipertua Negeri Pulau Pinang Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas pada Majlis Anugerah Sukan 2010 di Tanjung Bungah di sini.

Chong Wei yang diwakili abangnya, Lee Chong Eng, 36, tidak dapat hadir kerana menyertai kejohanan terbuka Macau minggu ini.

Lebih manis apabila beliau turut menggondol Anugerah Perdana TYT Negeri Pulau Pinang 2010.

Sementara itu, Nicol yang diwakili bapanya, Desmond David, 64, tidak dapat hadir kerana terikat dengan latihan rutinnya di Poland, Amsterdam dan dijadual berlepas pulang ke tanah air minggu depan.

Chong Wei dan Nicol, masing-masing membawa pulang piala pusingan, piala iringan, sijil penghargaan dan wang tunai RM3,000.

Anugerah Olahragawan Harapan pula diraih atlet badminton Nelson Heg Wei Keat, 18, yang menadi naib juara dalam acara beregu lelaki pada Kejohanan Badminton Remaja Dunia tahun lepas.

Manakala atlet karate, Sek Jia Wen, 16, dianugerah Olahragawati harapan 2010 atas kejayaannya menempah pingat perak dalam acara individu kebangsaan Remaja ke-20 dan pingat emas dalam acara berpasukan.

Mereka berdua masing-masing membawa pulang piala pusingan, piala iringan, sijil penghargaan, dan wang tunai RM2,000.

Anugerah Pasukan terbaik 2010 pula dimenangi Pasukan Karate bagi kategori lelaki dan wanita berdasarkan pencapaian mereka yang membanggakan dalam Kejohanan Hong Kong ke-10 (emas) dan Kejohanan Koi Dunia Greece ke-19 (emas).

Govt Always Gives Emphasis To Sporting Culture, Says PM

KUALA TERENGGANU, May 29 (Bernama) -- Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badaw i said the government always gives emphasis on cultivating a strong sporting culture in achieving excellence at the international level.
