KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 28 (Bernama) -- National 400-metre hurdler Noraseela Khalid has the right to voice dissatisfaction against the Malaysian Amateur Athletics Union (MAAU) for allegedly neglecting the welfare of athletes.
Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek said, as a senior athlete, she was entitled to voice her opinion to ensure the welfare of athletes, including back-ups, were looked after.
"We view Noraseela as a senior athlete who has contributed to athletics, other than guiding other athletes, including juniors.
"It is (therefore) not wrong if she voices her grouses," he told Bernama here today.
He said this when commenting on criticism from MAAU council member and Johor Amateur Athletics Association honourary secretary S. Rajasegaran who lamented that Noraseela appeared unappreciative over MAAU's benefits towards her.
Earlier, Noraseela was reported to have criticised the MAAU management over its apparent inappreciation of the deeds and sacrifices of athletes, after she defended her 400-metre hurdle gold medal at the recent SEA Games in Indonesia.
Ahmad Shabery said verbal disputes between MAAU and athletes in athletics could be overcome using the right channel, adding that he would not get involved because it was an internal issue.
He hoped Noraseela would continue to contribute towards national athletics.
