SEPANG, Dec 21 (Bernama) -- Malaysian paralympic athletes displayed a high level of determination and commitment during the ASEAN Para Games in Solo, Indonesia, although they did not meet the target set said Chef-de-Mission Datuk Borhan Dollah.
"They competed with a lot of determination and their commitment level was high. They may have not achieved the initial target but we can still be proud of the overall achievement.
"Our athletes not only faced their opposition, they also had to overcome the hostile fans from the host country. They (paralympic athletes) also faced what the normal athletes had undergone during the SEA Games," he told reporters after arriving with the Malaysian contingent at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) here Wednesday.
Malaysia had targeted 57 gold medals but ended their campaign with 51 gold, 35 silver, 42 bronze medals to finish third overall behind champion Thailand with 115 gold, 94 silver, 71 bronze and host Indonesia who finished with 107 gold, 99 silver and 83 bronze medals.
The Malaysian contingent comprising 120 athletes competed in 10 of the 11 sports contested, namely athletics, archery, badminton, goal ball, powerlifting, swimming, table tennis, sitting volleyball, wheelchair tennis and tenpin bowling.
Malaysia did not take part in chess.
Myanmar will host the next ASEAN Para Games in 2014.
