Sports Ministry To Review Training Procedures For Cyclists To Ensure Safety

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 30 (Bernama) - The Youth and Sports Ministry will review all safety procedures for training and competition involving the national cycling team.

Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek said this is due to an accident involving the cycling team during test session for selection to 2012 Asian Cycling Championships (ACC) in Putrajaya, Sunday.

He said Malaysia has organised many cycling events and understands the procedures to be followed during competition.

"We will study whether the accident involved weakness in safety procedures. More warning signs wil also be put during races," he said after visiting cyclist Mariana Mohamad at Damansara Specialist Hospital here.

Also present were National Sports Institute chief executive officer, Datuk Dr Ramlan Abdul Aziz and Malaysian National Cycling Federation deputy president Datuk Naim Mohamad.

Other cyclists involved in the accident with a car were Masziyaton Mohd Radzi and juniors Ahmad Azri Ahmad and Abdul Azizi Zahid.

Shabery said that he was told the police and marshalls were present to monitor the traffic movement during the race.

"If the incident was caused by driver negligence, appropriate action will be taken by the police."

He said all expenses for Mariana's medical treatment will be borne by the insurance company and the damaged bicycle will also be replaced.

Meanwhile, Dr Ramlan said Mariana who has three major injury in the arm, left rib and knee, is expected to recover in three months.
