HOCKEY: All set for Asian show

MALACCA is set to host its first international hockey tournament as its stadium received a RM1 million facelift and the opening ceremony will be the first of its kind.

.
The MBM Hockey Stadium has undergone a RM1 million facelift.

The Junior Asia Cup, which also doubles up as a World Cup Qualifier, will be held on May 3-13 with players and officials ferried by boats along the Malacca River to the venue of the opening ceremony.
"We are proud to play host to the tournament and have worked hard to ensure that all preparations are of international standards," said Datuk Nur Azmi Ahmad, deputy president of Malacca HA and senior vice president of the Malaysian Hockey Confederation.

"It is an honour for Malacca to play hosts as this is the first time we are given the opportunity to host a top class tournament and that is why we want the opening ceremony to be the first of its kind.
"And another pride is that Malaysia coach K. Dharmaraj, manager Mirnawan Nawawi and assistant coach Nor Azlan Bakar are all from Malacca as well," said Nur Azmi.
Eight teams will battle for two tickets to the World Cup, with India claiming the third as hosts next year in New Delhi.

The eight are: Malaysia, South Korea, Iran and Japan in Group A, while in Group B are India, Pakistan, China and Sri Lanka.
The MBM Hockey Stadium has undergone renovations that cost more then RM1 million and the after effects are there for all to admire.

The grandstand has been upgraded with dedicated media and broadcast rooms and seats fitted as well on the terraces. Even the changing rooms have been done up, truly reflecting a world class venue.
And that is not all, as the lighting system has been upgraded, enough for telecasting matches in high definition.
And fans are also in for a treat, as host broadcaster Astro Arena is planning to telecast all Malaysian matches live.

As for Pakistan, among the favourites to claim a slot in the final, seasoned forward Umar Bhutta will lead them.

"We have a strong combination in the presence of five senior players and we are hoping to see boys performing well to reach the final," said team manager-cum-coach Rana Mujahid.

Malaysian junior athletes are just too ‘lembik’

Saya setuju. We are working on more coaches! “ @ManOlimpik : Malaysian junior athletes are just too ‘lembik’ http://t.co/7D7wmHWaNy ” — Khairy Jamaluddin (@Khairykj) June 10, 2014 The benchmark. Can our junior athletes train as hard as Malaysia's world No.1 badminton player, Lee Chong Wei? “IT IS okay lah. The training is not too bad lah. I will try lah … Wah, so hard lah today.” These are some of the common statements I hear from our juniors nowadays. It is not only in badminton. It is the easy-going, laid-back attitude and lack of competitiveness at grassroots level that we have problems producing quality players. I have travelled quite a bit. After ending my decade-long career with the national team, I went to play in the league in Europe. It’s different there. The European athletes know what they want. And they do it with real focus. Even the young ones possess admirable self-control and show a high level of commitment. During my time in the ...

Organising Major Sports Events Can Inspire Sports Culture Among The People - Khairy

PUTRAJAYA, June 5 (Bernama) -- Organising major sports events can help inspire sports culture among the people and ensure a healthy lifestyle said Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin. Khairy said the Tour of Malaysia cycling race organised since 1963, for example, can encourage more people to take the sport in a more competitive way or just for recreation purposes. "A study carried out by a world renown medical journal, The Lancet, revealed that 61 percent of adults in Malaysia do not engage themselves in active sports. "A study by the Health Ministry revealed that only 25 percent of Malaysians exercise," he said in his speech when launching the 2013 Tour of Malaysia (Jelajah Malaysia) at the Youth and Sports Ministry, here, Wednesday. "Cycling, though not as popular here as in countries like Denmark, the activity is becoming popular among the people as can be seen through an increase in sale of bicycles for recreation," he sa...
