KUALA LUMPUR: The national women’s hockey team, still reeling from
two huge defeats, fought back from two goals down to salvage a 2-2 draw
in their match against Belarus in the Olympic qualifier in Kakamigahara,
Japan, yesterday.
Belarus shot ahead in the 17th minute through Nadzeya Silitskaya’s deflected goal before Maryia Halinouskaya made it 2-0 with a penalty corner goal.
Siti Noor Amarina Ruhani then sparked the Malaysian comeback, scoring both goals late in the match.
Malaysia had lost 4-0 to Azerbaijan and 8-0 to Japan and are out of the reckoning for a place in the London Olympics.
In another match yesterday, Japan were surprisingly held to a 0-0 draw by Chile, who are Malaysia’s next opponents tomorrow.
