THREE open frames in the girls' singles final denied Hee Kar Yen the title on her debut at the World Youth Championships in Bangkok yesterday.
The Malaysian youngster started badly with a seven-split open frame but bounced back with back-to-back strikes.
However, open frames in the fourth and ninth ended her hopes of getting the better of Seon Jeong. She lost 228-169.
Cristina and Colombia's Juliana France, both losing semi-finalists, took bronze.
"I tried to reproduce my shots from the semi-finals but the lane was too tough in the final," said Kar Yen in Bangkok yesterday.
"My strategy was to play the outside line but my ball was not reacting well enough. I am disappointed but I hope to build from this for the remaining events."
On the performance of Kar Yen, team manager Cheah Ban Cheng said the opening frame split caught her off guard.
"She did have solid pocket releases but could not string in the strikes.
"Although, her coach (Ben Heng) tried to make adjustments, it was too late," said Ban Cheng.
The United States' Marshall Kent defeated Japan's Shusaku Asato 226-197 in the boys' singles final while Singapore's Basil Low and Korea's Ryu Ji Hoon, both losing semi-finallists, were the bronze medallists.
The boys' and girls' doubles were due to start late yesterday.
