IN three years' time, Adiq Husainie Othman hopes he will be lining up at the start of the Tour de France but for now he has nothing but next month's Olympics to focus on.
Adiq Husainie's initial aim will be to complete the 250-kilometre race run over nine laps on a 15.5km circuit on July 28 in London. The route includes a tough climb up Box Hill which the peloton will have to pass nine times."That's the focus firstly. I have to stay with the front of the group and safely finish the race. Once I'm in that position, then I can look at my next target which is to do something special in the race," said Adiq Husainie.
The 21-year-old from Champion System Pro Cycling Team will be joined by Amir Mustafa Rusli in the race, where they already envision a tough time just getting to the finish line.
Thus Adiq Husainie hopes to put the finishing touches to his Olympic preparations when he heads to Belgium on Monday for a month-long training camp.
"It's exactly a month to go to the race, so now it's about maintaining my physical condition and in Belgium it will be about improving my mental strength," said Adiq Husainie.
"We'll be entering some tough one-day races there, which will help me prepare for London. Finishing those races well will give me the confidence I need at the Olympics."
Adiq Husainie yesterday joined former Olympian M. Kumaresan as ambassadors for sports network Eurosport's launching of its live coverage of the 99th edition of the Tour de France which begins in Liege, Belgium tomorrow.
The duo went head-to-head in a 5km race on stationary trainers in which the 45-year old Kumaresan beat Adiq Husainie. However, Adiq Husainie did start the 'race' with a one-minute handicap.
"That's my dream and the reason why I took up cycling. Since I was a kid the Tour de France has been my ultimate goal and my target now is to make it there in three years," said Adiq Husainie, who tipped Britain's Bradley Wiggins of Team Sky as his favourite for the overall title.
Every stage of the race will be aired live exclusively on Eurosport. By Arnaz M. Khairul
