PUTRAJAYA, June 26 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Youth and Sports has
taken a number of initiative to unearth talented young golfers and
develop the golf industry in the country.
Its Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek said among efforts in the pipeline is to offer scholarship to potential young golfers to pursue their higher education and their golf game.
"I want to explore the possibility of setting up a special fund that can be sustainable and not depend on the government alone for funds," he said after witnessing the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry and Golf House Academy (GHA) here Tuesday.
For example, in the United States, if a student is offered to become a golf professional, the player would be given USD2.5 million (RM7.75 million) from a special fund and the player would contribute to the fund in the future when he starts earning from the game, he said.
Ahmad Shabery said discussions would be held with Perbadanan Tabung Pendidikan Tinggi Nasional (PTPTN) to explore the initiative of developing any sport from among university students.
