Fatin grabs gold in rhythmic gymnastics

FATIN Zakirah Jalany Zain Jalany of Federal Territories redeemed herself by winning the rhythmic gymnastics individual all around gold medal in the Malaysian Games (Sukma) at the Sukpa Gymnastics Stadium.

The Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) student, who finished behind team-mate Tai Qing Tong in the team event on the first day of the competition, grabbed the gold medal with a total of 97.299 points yesterday.

Qing Tong (95.398) settled for the silver and Selangorā€™s Shak Yuki (91.766) the bronze.

Fatin, who won the team and individual all around gold medals in the 4th Asean School Games in Surabaya earlier this month, is glad that she managed to make amends for her poor performance on the first day.

ā€œI was a bit disappointed to finish second behind Qing Tong, so I really wanted to improve my performance for the gold medal,ā€ said the 15-year-old Fatin.

ā€œI performed my routines better, especially in my pet event ā€“ the clubs. But itā€™s still not perfect and I hope to do better in the individual apparatus round.

ā€œI guess it will be tougher. Qing Tong will definitely be my biggest threat.ā€

Ex-coach's jail sentence cut to a year

PUTRAJAYA: The Court of Appeal yesterday sentenced former athletics coach C. Ramanathan to 12 months' jail for molesting two junior athletes 19 years ago. A three-man bench led by Datuk Mohd Hishamudin Mohd Yunus unanimously dismissed Ramanathan's appeal against conviction, but varied the jail sentence of four years to a year, which was to run concurrently. Following yesterday's ruling, Ramanathan, 75, a former teacher, walked out a free man as he had served 10 months in Kajang Prison. Convicts get one-third remission for good behaviour while in prison. However, he will lose his pension. Hishamudin, who sat with Datuk Abdul Wahab Patail and Datuk Linton Albert, said the court found no merit to overturn the conviction. "However, in reducing the sentence, we considered Ramanathan's age and the long years the appeal has taken." Deputy public prosecutor Awang Armadajaya Awang Mahmud submitted that then High Court judge Tan Sri Abdull Hamid E...
