Sea Games 2017: OCM Shall Submit Proposal Before Announcing To Public

KUALA LUMPUR, July 20 (Bernama) -- The Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) should submit a proposal to the government before announcing that Malaysia would host the 2017 Sea Games to the public.

National Sports Council (NSC) Director-General Datuk Seri Zolkples Embong said the discussion should be carried out taking into account the financial implications, before making the decision to organise the Sea Games.

"I don't think the OCM will be able to organise the games without government assistance, but if the OCM has sufficient financial resources, NSC will be more than happy to approve.

"The NSC has experience in organising larger games like the Commonwealth and Sea Games. So, it is not a problem for us," he told reporters after chairing a meeting with the London Paralympic team managers at the National Sports Complex here Friday.

He was commenting on the OCM's statement on Wednesday, agreeing to host the 2017 Sea Games, after Brunei decided to host the 2019 Games.

  1. Datuk Zul, Certainly MOM have the financial resources to organise the SEA Games without the Government financial assistance. MOM is rich with the prudent spending under the guidance of the Secretary General Dato Sieh Kok Chi. As far as MONM is concerned you chaps just do your part and leave the organising ability to MOM. That's the way to go MOM!

Ex-coach's jail sentence cut to a year

PUTRAJAYA: The Court of Appeal yesterday sentenced former athletics coach C. Ramanathan to 12 months' jail for molesting two junior athletes 19 years ago. A three-man bench led by Datuk Mohd Hishamudin Mohd Yunus unanimously dismissed Ramanathan's appeal against conviction, but varied the jail sentence of four years to a year, which was to run concurrently. Following yesterday's ruling, Ramanathan, 75, a former teacher, walked out a free man as he had served 10 months in Kajang Prison. Convicts get one-third remission for good behaviour while in prison. However, he will lose his pension. Hishamudin, who sat with Datuk Abdul Wahab Patail and Datuk Linton Albert, said the court found no merit to overturn the conviction. "However, in reducing the sentence, we considered Ramanathan's age and the long years the appeal has taken." Deputy public prosecutor Awang Armadajaya Awang Mahmud submitted that then High Court judge Tan Sri Abdull Hamid E...

The Indonesia SEA Games Organizing Committee (Inasoc), was qouted by Jakarta Post as saying that a pair of Komodo dragons, a male (Modo) and a female (Modi), were chosen in recognition of the Republic's conservation efforts to protect the dwindling number of the rare lizard. The Komodo dragons, the largest lizard in the world, only live on the Indonesian islands of Komodo in Flores, East Nusa Tenggara. On Jan 15, Inasoc unveiled its logo, a Garuda eagle, to symbolize the power and grandeur of Indonesia.
