National Sports Associations Welcome Rm50 Mln Allocation For 2016 Olympics

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 28 (Bernama) -- National sports associations welcomed the RM50 million allocation to prepare athletes for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil as announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak when tabling the 2013 Budget today.

Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF) deputy president Datuk Naim Mohamad said the 'big' allocation from the government would help inspire athletes in their search for the country's first ever Olympic gold.

"The allocation of RM50 million for a four-year period under the 'Road to Rio' programme will ensure that all programmes carried out towards that goal will be fulfilled.

"The announcement to build a new velodrome in Seremban will certainly give added inspiration to the sport of track cycling," he told Bernama Friday.

He added that MNCF would be meeting the National Sports Council (NSC) on Oct 2, to discuss programmes for the 'Road to Rio'.

Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) president Datuk Seri Mohd Nadzmi Mohd Salleh in welcoming the announcement by Najib to set up the badminton academy in Bukit Kiara, expressed confidence that the availability of the academy would further support the growth of badminton in the country.

"The academy will help churn out a bigger pool of potential badminton players and ensure a continuous supply of players to the country," he said adding that BAM also had plans to set up a Research and Development centre, specifically for badminton.

Meanwhile, Amateur Swimming Union of Malaysia (ASUM) President Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim said he was grateful to the Prime Minister for giving priority to the development of sports in the country, especially to prepare a formidable team for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

"At the association level, we will give our input to ensure the success of the 'Road to Rio' programme. We will work closely with the NSC and the Ministry of Youth and Sports," he said.

Shahidan said a bigger allocation would enable swimmers and divers in the country to undergo a more comprehensive programme to prepare for Rio.

"Apart from giving additional focus on London Olympics bronze medal winner Pandelela Rinong, we will also implement programmes that can uplift the performances of junior swimmers and divers," he said.

Malaysian junior athletes are just too ‘lembik’

Saya setuju. We are working on more coaches! “ @ManOlimpik : Malaysian junior athletes are just too ‘lembik’ http://t.co/7D7wmHWaNy ” — Khairy Jamaluddin (@Khairykj) June 10, 2014 The benchmark. Can our junior athletes train as hard as Malaysia's world No.1 badminton player, Lee Chong Wei? “IT IS okay lah. The training is not too bad lah. I will try lah … Wah, so hard lah today.” These are some of the common statements I hear from our juniors nowadays. It is not only in badminton. It is the easy-going, laid-back attitude and lack of competitiveness at grassroots level that we have problems producing quality players. I have travelled quite a bit. After ending my decade-long career with the national team, I went to play in the league in Europe. It’s different there. The European athletes know what they want. And they do it with real focus. Even the young ones possess admirable self-control and show a high level of commitment. During my time in the ...

Organising Major Sports Events Can Inspire Sports Culture Among The People - Khairy

PUTRAJAYA, June 5 (Bernama) -- Organising major sports events can help inspire sports culture among the people and ensure a healthy lifestyle said Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin. Khairy said the Tour of Malaysia cycling race organised since 1963, for example, can encourage more people to take the sport in a more competitive way or just for recreation purposes. "A study carried out by a world renown medical journal, The Lancet, revealed that 61 percent of adults in Malaysia do not engage themselves in active sports. "A study by the Health Ministry revealed that only 25 percent of Malaysians exercise," he said in his speech when launching the 2013 Tour of Malaysia (Jelajah Malaysia) at the Youth and Sports Ministry, here, Wednesday. "Cycling, though not as popular here as in countries like Denmark, the activity is becoming popular among the people as can be seen through an increase in sale of bicycles for recreation," he sa...
