Happy Pandelela

OLYMPIC bronze medallist Pandelela Rinong is delighted her coach Yang Zhuliang has agreed to stay in Malaysia.

The Chinese-born Australian, who has received several lucrative offers, including one from Australia, has opted to stay in Malaysia and help Pandelela for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

ā€œIā€™m happy our coach has told us he has decided to stay,ā€ said Pandelela who won the Olympic bronze in the 10m individual platform. ā€œI donā€™t know if he has signed the contract, but he has already received the offer.ā€

The National Sports Council (NSC) has already offered the new contract to the 48-year-old diving coach, whose current contract ā€“ rumoured to be worth US$5,000 a month ā€“ expires on Oct 31.
It is learnt his new contract will make him among the highest paid coaches in the country and is for two years with an option to be renewed for another two years which will take him right up to the Rio Olympics.

Zhuliang arrived in Malaysia 11 years ago and was instrumental in helping Yeoh Ken Nee and Leong Mun Yee win bronze medals in the 2002 Asian Games.
The duo are still going strong and were in the diving squad for the London Olympics, but failed to win any medals.

After four years in Malaysia, Yang Zhuliang was lured away by the Australian Institute of Sports but returned to his ā€˜adoptedā€™ home four years ago.
He is now set to extend his stay and that is good news not  just for Pandelela but also the rest of the diving squad.

Ex-coach's jail sentence cut to a year

PUTRAJAYA: The Court of Appeal yesterday sentenced former athletics coach C. Ramanathan to 12 months' jail for molesting two junior athletes 19 years ago. A three-man bench led by Datuk Mohd Hishamudin Mohd Yunus unanimously dismissed Ramanathan's appeal against conviction, but varied the jail sentence of four years to a year, which was to run concurrently. Following yesterday's ruling, Ramanathan, 75, a former teacher, walked out a free man as he had served 10 months in Kajang Prison. Convicts get one-third remission for good behaviour while in prison. However, he will lose his pension. Hishamudin, who sat with Datuk Abdul Wahab Patail and Datuk Linton Albert, said the court found no merit to overturn the conviction. "However, in reducing the sentence, we considered Ramanathan's age and the long years the appeal has taken." Deputy public prosecutor Awang Armadajaya Awang Mahmud submitted that then High Court judge Tan Sri Abdull Hamid E...
