KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 13 (Bernama) -- The National Under-21 squad beat Laos 4-2 in their opening match of the VFF Newspaper Cup tournament played in Gia Lai, Vietnam Saturday.
Malaysia opened accounts through Muhammad Ariff Farhan Md Isa in the 15th minute before Ahmad Hazwan Bakri extended the lead in the 34th minute to take a healthy 2-0 half-time lead.
But while Ong Kim Swee's boys took their foot off the pedal at the start of the second half, Laos mounted a spirited fight back to level the score through Thinnakone Vongsa's 53rd minute strike and Sitthideth Khantavong's 56th minute goal.
The two goals served as a tonic for the Malaysian boys as skipper A. Thamil Arasu restored the advantage in the 86th minute before D. Saarvindran made sure of all three points with the fourth goal in the dying seconds.
Malaysia take on Sydney FC from Australia in their next match on Wednesday.
