KUALA LUMPUR: National diver Pandelela Rinong will receive a special
pin reserved only for winners of Olympic medals at the end of this year.
Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) assistant general manager Fong Wan Hor said the pin is the same as the one given to top shuttler Lee Chong Wei after he won the silver medal in Beijing in 2008.
“Chong Wei and Pandelela will be the recipients this time for their silver and bronze medal feats in the London Olympics.
“Each pin carries a serial number and must be given out by a person of high authority in the country.
“We plan to hand it to them during the annual OCM Olympic award ceremony later this year,” he said after receiving a visit by Pandelela and her university mates to the OCM Hall of Fame Museum yesterday.
Pandelela enrolled for a sports science degree course at Universiti Malaya last month and was at the museum with 40 of her colleagues on a field trip.
The 19-year-old said it was the first time she has gone to OCM as a student.
“I’ve been here many times for functions but this is the first time I’ve really explored every corner of the museum. It’s fun to come here as a student. Wendy Ng (fellow national diver) and I are on the committee and we were tasked with handling the application and invite the journalists we know to come too,” said Pandelela, who will be competing in the Asian Championships in Dubai next month.
