Chong Wei, Mew Choo hold grand and glitzy wedding reception.

KUALA LUMPUR: The rain was no damper for the 1,500 guests who turned up in style for the glitzy "wedding of the year" reception of international badminton star Datuk Lee Chong Wei and Datin Wong Mew Choo here Friday night.

Guests began arriving as early as 7pm, and spent the time taking photographs and admiring the white-themed decoration along the foyer of the hall at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.

While walking into the hall on a red carpet, some of the guests were also interviewed by host Baki Zainal.

The wedding reception boasted a guest list that included Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah and Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Hajah Haminah, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and his wife Puan Sri Norainee Abdul Rahman, Cabinet ministers, local and international celebrities, and several notable athletes.

The much-anticipated event commenced at 8.30pm with the couple presenting themselves before the King and Queen, when Lee presented the royal couple with a gold badminton racquet.

A dapper Lee was dressed in a black tuxedo and bow-tie while Wong was resplendent in a white gown and tiara.

They later changed to their second set of outfits, Lee sporting a dark blue suit and red tie and Wong looking stunning in a strapless red gown with gold embroidery.

The reception was aired live via online portal TonTon.my.

One in a Million winner Suki Low and Manbai were among the artistes who entertained the guests for the evening.

China's ambassador to Malaysia Chai Xi, who was among the guests, expressed his best wishes to the couple.

"Chong Wei is a star and a key citizen of Malaysia, and his sportsmanship has earned him fans even in China. I am proud of him and wish him and his wife a happy married life," he told reporters.

Lee's elder brother told reporters outside the venue that preparations for the wedding had been a daunting task but the family was happy it had taken place smoothly.

Olympic silver medallist Lee had married Wong, his girlfriend of 11 years, in a private tea ceremony at his house earlier in the day.

The couple will hosting another dinner Saturday, at the same venue, which will be attended by sports acquaintances and business associates.
