KUALA LUMPUR: A hamstring injury ended national No. 2 Low Wee Wern’s
hopes of another good outing in the Hong Kong Open squash championships.
The injury forced Wee Wern, who reached the semi-finals last year, to retire in the second round against Camille Serme of France yesterday.
The Penangite, who moved from world No. 10 to No. 7 last month, won the first set 11-5 and lost the second 10-12. She was then leading 2-0 in the third when she slipped and fell.
After receiving treatment, she continued to play but lost 3-11.
Despite having her leg strapped with bandage, she played on and was trailing 7-9 in the fourth set when dived to retrieve a shot.
This time she stayed down.
The 22-year-old Wee Wern, seeded seventh, said that it was unfortunate that she got injured in the second round.
“I started off well and won the first set without any real challenge from Camille. The second set, however, was a close affair with the score at 10-10. Camille played well to collect the two points to win,” said Wee Wern.
“When I slipped and fell in the third set, I suffered a hamstring injury. I continued to play after getting treatment but but it affected my game.
“I gave it my best in the fourth but I aggravated the injury when I dived for the shot. I had to retire ... I couldn’t continue.”
Wee Wern said she would seek treatment from National Sports Council (NSC) physiotherapist Nor Bert Mohnen, who is in Hong Kong for the championships.
World No. 14 Serme will face veteran Rachael Grinham of Australia in the quarter-finals.
Top seed Nicol David had no problems disposing of local player Joey Chan 11-5, 11-5, 11-1 in 27 minutes to set up a quarter-final clash against Kasey Brown of Australia.
Malaysia’s challenge in the men’s competition came to an end after Ong Beng Hee lost 8-11, 9-11, 7-11 to top seed and defending champion James Willstrop of England.
