Use The Right Forum To Amend FAM's Article 88 - Shabery

KUALA TERENGGANU, Feb 26 (Bernama) -- Council members who are not happy with the Football Association of Malaysia's (FAM) enforcement of regulations should voice out at the national body's congress.

Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek every association, including the FAM certainly would have their own regulations and disciplinary procedures under their constitution.

"Those in the FAM must abide by FAM's conditions because the national body has the power. But if they don't agree with any action taken by the FAM, the council member has a role to amend such articles.

"Wait for the annual general meeting and get a two-third majority, whether by campaigning or through any other medium," he told reporters after giving out 1Malaysia Book Vouchers in conjunction with the Penerbitan Ilmiah Univeristi Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) exhibition, here, Tuesday.

He was commenting on claims that the FAM was flexing its muscle at anyone who questioned or criticised the national body or the national football team, although such initiatives were for the development of football in the country.

FAM's Article 88 Statute forbid anyone, including coaches and players, from criticising FAM or the national team.

The national body had recently slapped a number of high ranking officials, including its deputy president, with lengthy suspensions.

Meanwhile, FAM deputy president Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah made a similar call to affiliates, urging them to come forward and submit their proposals if they wished to review FAM's Article 88.

"Since the decision to include Article 88 was made during FAM's congress meeting, any decision to review the article should also be done at a similar platform. If there are calls for review, we should look into the possibility," he said after launching the Ijtimak Masjid Gemilang programme in Kuantan, Pahang, here, today.

Tengku Abdullah said even other issues like questioning the quality of referees must also be done through the right channel instead of going to the media, as such issues can be sensationalised by the latter.

Ex-coach's jail sentence cut to a year

PUTRAJAYA: The Court of Appeal yesterday sentenced former athletics coach C. Ramanathan to 12 months' jail for molesting two junior athletes 19 years ago. A three-man bench led by Datuk Mohd Hishamudin Mohd Yunus unanimously dismissed Ramanathan's appeal against conviction, but varied the jail sentence of four years to a year, which was to run concurrently. Following yesterday's ruling, Ramanathan, 75, a former teacher, walked out a free man as he had served 10 months in Kajang Prison. Convicts get one-third remission for good behaviour while in prison. However, he will lose his pension. Hishamudin, who sat with Datuk Abdul Wahab Patail and Datuk Linton Albert, said the court found no merit to overturn the conviction. "However, in reducing the sentence, we considered Ramanathan's age and the long years the appeal has taken." Deputy public prosecutor Awang Armadajaya Awang Mahmud submitted that then High Court judge Tan Sri Abdull Hamid E...
