Review old-fashioned, outdated youth and sports programmes - Khairy

KAPAR: Old-fashioned and outdated youth and sports programmes needed to be reviewed and improved, Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said yesterday.

The ministry was in the midst of reviewing all youth programmes as part of the ministry's strategic plan drafted until 2015, he said.

"Majority of the youths now stay in the city or at the fringes of town. So the ministry’s approaches via the state and district offices have to change according to times.

"We must scrap off the assumptions that our programmes are old-fashioned and outdated," he said during a working visit to the Klang Rakan Muda Complex here.

He stressed that the ministry must always be ahead of change and ensure that its programmes mirrored the contemporary changes.

"We also have to update the identity and branding of our programmes while bringing in new content," he said.

He cited leadership training modules and personality development programmes as some of the programmes that had become obsolete and needed to be redesigned.

Besides these, he added that entrepreneurial courses needed to be upgraded in the state as well because Selangor had a huge potential to create more entrepreneurs.

However, he pointed out that futsal tournaments, martial arts and youth discussion forums should be continued as they received very good response from the youths.

Among the new programmes being considered by the ministry now were programmes involving spriritual and mind development, he said.

"Youths these days are interested in debates and issues, so we need events that can reach out to them and challenge their minds.
"They have also become increasingly interested in religious lectures, especially those conducted by celebrity religious leaders," he said, adding that the ministry will find ways to cooperate with religious leaders to increase the number of religious programmes.

The introduction of new programmes will depend on available funding, he said, adding that some could be introduced as early as this year.

Rajagobal was let off the hook by the Football Association of Malaysia's (FAM) Disciplinary Committee after finding no evidence that he had violated FAM's Article 88, as claimed. FAM Disciplinary Committee chairman Datuk Taufik Abdul Razak said the committee had decided not to charge Rajagobal after carefully analysing the video of the post-match press conference by the 56-year-old coach. "After listening to the recording of the post-match press conference, we decided to drop the charge against Rajagopal as he did not make such a statement. "Maybe his (Rajagobal) assessment and comments of the match was misconstrued by the media. There was no mention of the FAM policy throughout his comments," said Taufik after emerging from a three-hour Disciplinary Committee meeting at Wisma FAM in Kelana Jaya, here, Wednesday. Rajagobal who does not mince his words when asked to com...
