KUALA LUMPUR, July 29 (Bernama) -- Former Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) President Tan Sri Elyas Omar feels the appointment of Tan Sri Tengku Mahaleel Tengku Ariff as the BAM President, an old hand would provide a much needed impetus to the sport.
Elyas Omar who had helmed BAM from (1985-1993) said the appointment of Tengku Mahaleel, the former Chief Executive Officer of Proton Holdings Berhad, was the right choice since Tengku Mahaleel had vast experience in the sport.
"To my knowledge, even when I was heading the BAM, he (Tengku Mahaleel) was already a BAM council member. With his involvement in the sport for such a long time, he is the best candidate to replace Datuk Seri Mohd Nadzmi Mohd Salleh.
"I am confident Tengku Mahaleel will carry out his duties well and lift BAM or badminton in the country to another level," he told Bernama, today.
At the BAM's Annual General Meeting last Saturday, Tengku Mahaleel, 66 did not face any opposition in the race for the post of president since Mohd Nadzmi had already declared his intention to not contest after being appointed the President of the Badminton Asia Confederation (BAC) in March.
Meanwhile, members also retained Datuk Mohamed Al-Amin Abd Majid as the deputy president I and Datuk Mohamad Norza Zakaria as deputy president II for the 2013-2017 term while Mohd Nadzmi was named the Honorary President of BAM, a post that was newly created.
