I Failed To Find Right Formula To Produce More World Class Players - Nadzmi

KUALA LUMPUR, July 29 (Bernama) -- Former Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) President Datuk Seri Mohd Nadzmi Mohd Salleh admitted that he had failed to find a formula to produce more world class shuttlers during his 13-year tenure.

Nadzmi said the BAM under his leadership had carried out various initiatives but produced only minimum results when only products like World number one Datuk Lee Chong Wei and men's doubles pair Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong came through the mill.

He added that the achievement of other shuttlers was a major concern and would certainly be a major challenge to the new president to find the right formula to produce world champions.

"As the President of the Badminton Asia Confederation (BAC), we had discussed how countries like China and South Korea are able to produce world class players continuously and within a short period of time.

"They are doing something that others are not doing. If we are going to follow what Indonesia or Thailand are doing, we are not going to change or improve. China has embarked on new approaches...we have to find that formula. If we continue to follow the old methods, I do not guarantee that we can succeed," he said.

"We have to invest in the right people and the right management, then you can get the answer," said Mohd Nadzmi.

He added that Malaysia needed psychology experts who understood badminton so that they can help National shuttlers to prepare physically and mentally.

"China too do not have this formula (specialist in psychology) but they integrate all the resources available to come up with a new resource system. It is the same with South Korea. But I could not find the formula for success that China and South Korea had adopted," he said.

Mohd Nadzmi also expressed confidence in the leadership of BAM's new president Tan Sri Tengku Mahaleel Tengku Ariff to produce world class players.

Ex-coach's jail sentence cut to a year

PUTRAJAYA: The Court of Appeal yesterday sentenced former athletics coach C. Ramanathan to 12 months' jail for molesting two junior athletes 19 years ago. A three-man bench led by Datuk Mohd Hishamudin Mohd Yunus unanimously dismissed Ramanathan's appeal against conviction, but varied the jail sentence of four years to a year, which was to run concurrently. Following yesterday's ruling, Ramanathan, 75, a former teacher, walked out a free man as he had served 10 months in Kajang Prison. Convicts get one-third remission for good behaviour while in prison. However, he will lose his pension. Hishamudin, who sat with Datuk Abdul Wahab Patail and Datuk Linton Albert, said the court found no merit to overturn the conviction. "However, in reducing the sentence, we considered Ramanathan's age and the long years the appeal has taken." Deputy public prosecutor Awang Armadajaya Awang Mahmud submitted that then High Court judge Tan Sri Abdull Hamid E...

The Indonesia SEA Games Organizing Committee (Inasoc), was qouted by Jakarta Post as saying that a pair of Komodo dragons, a male (Modo) and a female (Modi), were chosen in recognition of the Republic's conservation efforts to protect the dwindling number of the rare lizard. The Komodo dragons, the largest lizard in the world, only live on the Indonesian islands of Komodo in Flores, East Nusa Tenggara. On Jan 15, Inasoc unveiled its logo, a Garuda eagle, to symbolize the power and grandeur of Indonesia. Indonesia dominated the Games between 1977, when it first competed, and 1997, failing to top the medal charts only twice in that p...
