Changes galore in BAM

ACTION: Tengku Mahaleel lays groundwork ahead of council meeting

CLOSE circuit television (CCTV), presumably to monitor players during training sessions, is being installed at the Juara Stadium as president Tengku Mahaleel Tengku Ariff initiates changes in the BA of Malaysia.

Tengku Mahaleel, elected on July 27, has also met the coaches and has almost completed his appraisal of BAM's set-up.

Former international Tan Aik Mong, tipped to hold an important post in BAM, has also met the coaches and players.

In fact, the BAM president has also called for a dialogue with the media on Sept 4 for feedback on the way forward for Malaysian badminton.

It does look like Tengku Mahaleel -- who asked for 30 days to familiarise himself with the BAM structure -- will have all his plans in place by the time the association's council meeting is held on Sept 7.

Tengku Mahaleel, however, is keeping his cards close to his chest and in an SMS reply, said it would be pointless to issue any statement as long as he had not completed his review.
He met the coaches in an informal meeting last week but back-up singles coach Hendrawan said it was premature to comment on the new programme before Tengku Mahaleel makes an official announcement.

"The president has spoken to us (coaches) but we don't know yet what the changes are. We are also waiting for the council meeting as we will know our direction only after that."
The coaches were seen having meetings with BAM general manager Kenny Goh over the last few days, where they were supposed to review the tournament schedule of all players and also submit a progress report.

The players involvement in tournaments will be based on the coaches' report and those without high targets will not be considered for championships.

So far, BAM has submitted a squad of three singles and five doubles combinations for the Japan Open on Sept 17-22 but the list is likely to be reviewed where only Lee Chong Wei and mixed doubles Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying, by virtue of being defending champions, could get the nod.
Men's singles Liew Daren and Chong Wei Feng and men's doubles Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong as well as women's doubles Vivian Hoo-Woon Khe Wei are the others who were included in the squad for the Japan Open but they may face the chop.

The future of Kien Keat-Boon Heong will also be confirmed during the council meeting where splitting them could be a solution but it will not be a surprise if they are dropped from the national squad.

Tengku Mahaleel will also announce the new secretary during the council meeting and it is widely speculated that Ng Chin Chai, who held the position for three years under former BAM president Datuk Seri Nadzmi Salleh's reign, is not likely to be re-appointed.

The future of Koo Kien Keat (back) and Tan Boon Heong will be decided at the BAM council meeting.

Ex-coach's jail sentence cut to a year

PUTRAJAYA: The Court of Appeal yesterday sentenced former athletics coach C. Ramanathan to 12 months' jail for molesting two junior athletes 19 years ago. A three-man bench led by Datuk Mohd Hishamudin Mohd Yunus unanimously dismissed Ramanathan's appeal against conviction, but varied the jail sentence of four years to a year, which was to run concurrently. Following yesterday's ruling, Ramanathan, 75, a former teacher, walked out a free man as he had served 10 months in Kajang Prison. Convicts get one-third remission for good behaviour while in prison. However, he will lose his pension. Hishamudin, who sat with Datuk Abdul Wahab Patail and Datuk Linton Albert, said the court found no merit to overturn the conviction. "However, in reducing the sentence, we considered Ramanathan's age and the long years the appeal has taken." Deputy public prosecutor Awang Armadajaya Awang Mahmud submitted that then High Court judge Tan Sri Abdull Hamid E...

Badminton: Fans rooting for all-Malaysian semis

Reports: RAJES PAUL KUALA LUMPUR: The home fans will be rooting for an all-Malaysian men’s singles semi-final between Lee Chong Wei and Liew Daren. But Chong Wei is more fancied to advance than Daren in quarter-final matches against Indonesian Simon Santoso and Dane Peter Gade-Christensen respectively at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil today. Yesterday, Chong Wei defeated Vietnamese Nguyen Tien Minh 21-9, 18-21, 21-7 in a second-round match that saw the world number one struggling to adapt to the draught in the stadium in the second game. And Daren continued a fairy tale run in his home Open, blowing away a toothless Hsueh Hsuan-yi of Taiwan 21-14, 21-12. Although Choong Wei had to slog for the win over Tien Minh, the top seed and defending champion felt that he was playing better by the day. “I got off to a good start but found it hard to cope with the draught. I tried to catch up after losing my momentum but that did not happen and I decided to conserve energy for ...

Rajagobal Let Off The Hook

PETALING JAYA, April 24 (Bernama) -- National head coach Datuk K. Rajagobal was let off the hook by the Football Association of Malaysia's (FAM) Disciplinary Committee after finding no evidence that he had violated FAM's Article 88, as claimed. FAM Disciplinary Committee chairman Datuk Taufik Abdul Razak said the committee had decided not to charge Rajagobal after carefully analysing the video of the post-match press conference by the 56-year-old coach. "After listening to the recording of the post-match press conference, we decided to drop the charge against Rajagopal as he did not make such a statement. "Maybe his (Rajagobal) assessment and comments of the match was misconstrued by the media. There was no mention of the FAM policy throughout his comments," said Taufik after emerging from a three-hour Disciplinary Committee meeting at Wisma FAM in Kelana Jaya, here, Wednesday. Rajagobal who does not mince his words when asked to com...
