KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 22 (Bernama) -- National Football Development
Programme (NFDP) new project director Lim Teong Kim can help nurture
young footballers at the grassroots level to become national
second-liners, said National Sports Council (NSC) director-general Datuk
Seri Zokples Embong.
"NSC has been looking for an individual to fill the vacancy. The idea of appointing Teong Kim comes from the minister himself.
"The national football development programme was disrupted after Kim Chon resigned national youth football development head in May," said Zokples.
The 50-year-old Teong Kim, with six years of youth coaching experience with German champions Bayern Munich, will begin work in November in a bid to help Malaysia qualify for the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in 2019.
Yesterday, Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said Teong Kim would sign a five-year contract starting November to replace his brother, Lim Kim Chon, a former national player in the '80s.
Zokples said the NSC had held discussions with Teong Kim for over two weeks over his appointment, during which he visited several football development centres.
"Teong Kim was impressed with what we had done. He felt that the NSC has a good national football development foundation which could be developed to a higher level.
"NSC and the Football Association of Malaysia will work together in harnessing efforts to produce top flight second-liner footballers," he said.
Tiong Kim has 76 caps with the national team, apart from playing for Hertha BSC in Germany and Grazer AK in Austria.
