HONDA'S Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman bagged his first Supersports 600cc title after an epic season finale in the Petronas Asia Road Racing Championship (ARRC) at the Losail Circuit in Qatar yesterday.
The Musashi Boon Siew Honda Racing rider became the second Malaysian to win the championship after Chia Tuck Cheong, filling a 12-year gap with a 33.5 points advantage over title contender Katsuaki Fujiwara (BEET Kawasaki Racing).Azlan won both races in Qatar yesterday to seal the title.
"I'm lost for words. I can't believe that I actually won the championship.
"This is a really emotional moment for the team," said Azlan who was in tears on the podium when the Negaraku was played.
"This weekend was extremely challenging and the crew worked really hard to produce the best bike possible."
"We got lucky in Race One because I was able to escape the tussle between Fujiwara, Zamri, Broc and Yudhistira but Race Two was definitely a bit more dramatic."
Azlan etches his name as one of the SuperSports 600cc greats with 228 points followed by Fujiwara second and Zamri Baba third, each with 194.5 points and 149.5 points.
Additionally, Azlan's double victory helped Musashi Boon Siew Honda Racing seal the best team award ahead of BEET Kawasaki Racing and Petronas Hong Leong Yamaha.
Hadi Wijaya ended his campaign on a high note when he secured the Underbone 115cc crown, riding to the history books as the first rider to win the title three times.
The R9 Racing Team rider wrapped up the championship when he came in third for Race One.
Hadi then capped a memorable year with his third victory for the season in Race Two with his trademark last minute dash, crossing the finish line with 19'11.578s, a mere 0.006 seconds ahead of Mohd Amirul Ariff Musa.
