Thomas Cup: Ramdan Misbun Best Choice To Fill Vacant Single Slot- Chong Wei

KUALA LUMPUR, March 20 (Bernama) -- Misbun Ramdan Misbun is seen as a strong candidate to fill the vacant singles slot for the Thomas Cup, said world number one men's badminton player Datuk Lee Chong Wei.

Chong Wei said the view was based on the position of Ramdan as the country's fourth men's singles player and was ranked 48th in the world.

"Ramdan is also one of the players who produced consistent outstanding performance since last year. We have to follow world rankings and the results achieved last year.

"Nonetheless, the selection to fill the slot is by the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM). They will make the decision maybe tomorrow or next week," he told reporters after attending an incentive presentation ceremony for athletes who produced excellent results at the 2013 Maybank Malaysia Open Badminton Championship and Mynamar SEA Games last year, here today.

Chong Wei received an incentive of RM25,000 for winning the 2013 BWF Super Series Masters Finals, RM25,000 for the 2014 All-England Super Series Premier championship and an incentive for RM30,000 for winning the 2014 Malaysia Open Super Series Premier.

Meanwhile, the national badminton men's doubles pair of Lim Khim Wah-Goh V Shem received RM25,000 for winning the 2014 Malaysia Open Super Series Premier title while national women's doubles pair Woon Khe Wei-Vivian Hoo Kah Mun received RM28,000 for their SEA Games victory.

The incentives were presented by Maybank Group chief marketing officer Mohamed Adam Wee Abdullah.

Chong Wei said they needed to have strong team spirit to reach at least the Thomas Cup quarter-finals despite the stiff competition from China.

Among the players expected to represent the country at Thomas Cup in New Delhi, India from May 18 to 25 are Chong Wei, Chong Wei Feng (world ranking 14) and Liew Daren (world ranking 40).

Meanwhile, Vivian Hoo said the incentive was a motivation for all players but winning the SEA Games gold medal was memorable.

"It was sweet memory for me but it is in the past...I need to focus on events this year such as the Commonwealth Games and the Uber Cup," she said.

"After listening to the recording of the post-match press conference, we decided to drop the charge against Rajagopal as he did not make such a statement. "Maybe his (Rajagobal) assessment and comments of the match was misconstrued by the media. There was no mention of the FAM policy throughout his comments," said Taufik after emerging from a three-hour Disciplinary Committee meeting at Wisma FAM in Kelana Jaya, here, Wednesday. Rajagobal who does not mince his words when asked to com...
