PETALING JAYA: Disappointment turned to cheers for
Nabil Jeffri as he claimed his first career win in the ATS Formel 3 Cup
(German Formula 3) series in Oschersleben.
The 20-year-old Malaysian found himself at the back of the grid after he was penalised for a jump start offence in Race 1 of the opening round of the series on Saturday. The Team Motopark driver eventually finished sixth.
Nabil, however, fought back superbly to win the 15-lap Race Two in 20:36.770.
Starting from third on the grid, Nabil managed to grab the lead by the third lap and went all the way to take the chequered flag. Dutchman Indy Dontje of Lotus clocked 20:52.245 to finish second while Britain’s Sam Macleod of Van Amersfoort Racing was third in 20:56.538.
Weiron Tan, the other Malaysian representative driving for Van Amersfoort Racing, finished sixth.
Nabil was over the moon with the win despite the disappointing outcome in Race 1.
“I posted the fastest lap in Race 1 and I battled hard for sixth place. I knew my car had the pace.
“It is an amazing feeling.... it is my first win in the ATS Formel 3 Cup and my first time on the podium.
“It’s a great experience as this is my first time racing for Team Motopark. I want to thank my whole family and I hope to get more race wins,” said Nabil in a telephone interview.
The Malaysian is in his second season in the German F3 Cup, having finished eighth overall in the championship in his debut season last year.
The next stop for Nabil is Lausitzring from May 23-25.
