SEREMBAN, June 22 (Bernama) - The decision whether Asean will bid for
the 2034 World Cup or not will be made at the Asean youth and sports
ministers meeting at year end.
Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar said he would raise the matter during the meeting and Asean countries only need to endorse it.
"We will offer other Asean countries to join us in organising the World Cup. Asean countries that want to become co-host must have the means as it needs a large allocation," he told reporters after closing 'Karnival Koperasi Zon Selantan 2014' jointly organised by the Cooperatives Commission of Malaysia (CCM) of Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, Johor and Koperasi Persahabatan Seremban Bhd, here Sunday.
Khairy said although Asean consists of ten countries, the International Football Federation (FIFA) does not allow all the countries to be involved.
"I understand that FIFA only allows a maximum of three or four countries that are willing to co-host among Asean countries.
"Organising the World Cup is very costly. So, we need to check the financial capability of Asean countries that want to become the host. If there is an agreement, the first thing we will do is to study the cost.
"This study will take one year and when completed, will be presented to the Asean countries. From there, we can see who has the financial capability."
He hopes that Malaysia qualify for the World Cup as the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) and the ministry have a national football development plan.
"We will try to qualify for the World Cup. I cannot promise that we can qualify by 2030.
"It is important for us to bid and in the meantime we have prepare our team," he added.
