Appointment of Dollah Salleh as Harimau Malaya coach good enough - Khairy


The appointment of a local coach for the Harimau Malaya squad is sufficient, based on the squad's current performance and existing crop of players, says Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin.
He was commenting on the decision of the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) to appoint Dollah Salleh as the football national chief coach from June 28 to replace Datuk K.Rajagobal whose contract was not renewed at the end of last year.

Prior to this, FAM had listed two German coaches, Gert Engels and Wolfgang Sidka, as among the three short-listed candidates for the post which was vacant since last Dec 31.

Khairy said he was not agreeable to FAM's earlier proposal to hire a foreign coach for the national squad as it would involve a high expenditure.

"I have high hopes for the national squad after this and I hope that Dollah could make good preparations in facing various competitions like the AFF Suzuki Cup 2014 in Singapore and Vietnam at the year-end," he said at the presentation of the Sports Triumph Scheme Award (Shakam) at the National Sports Council (NSC) building in Bukit Jalil, near here, today.

The former Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) team coach has been given a two-year contract to guide the national squad.


Meanwhile, Khairy said although the national badminton squad failed to win the Thomas Cup in May, this year in New Delhi, India, the NSC still rewarded the players and officials with the award (Shakam) for being runners-up in the major championship.

"Hopefully, the award would spur the players to train and fight harder in two coming major sporting events, namely the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland from July 23 to Aug 3 and the Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea from Sept 19 to Oct 4," he said.

Khairy said Malaysia should emulate Japan which, although not a major power in badminton, was able to win the Thomas Cup 2014 competition.

Malaysia failed to win the Cup after going down 2-3 to Japan in the finals.

The Malaysian Thomas Cup squad comprising Datuk Lee Chong Wei, Chong Wei Feng, Liew Darren, Goh Soon Huat, Tan Boon Heong, Hoo Thien How, Tan Wee Kiong, Goh V Shem, Lim Khim Wah and Chan Peng Soon received RM8,000 each.

The coaches and supporting officials received RM16,000 under the Coaches Incentive Scheme (SGAR), while the Badminton Association of Malaysian received RM8,000 under the Excellent Sports Management Scheme (SIKAP).

Rajagobal Let Off The Hook

PETALING JAYA, April 24 (Bernama) -- National head coach Datuk K. Rajagobal was let off the hook by the Football Association of Malaysia's (FAM) Disciplinary Committee after finding no evidence that he had violated FAM's Article 88, as claimed.
