BAM, KBS Committee To Study Badminton Athlete's Doping Test Failure - Khairy

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 27 (Bernama) -- The decision to set up a joint committee by the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) and the Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS) is needed to trigger preparations if the sample B of a top national badminton player is reported positive.

Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said apart from that, the committee was also important in coordinating all information on the issue.

He told this to reporters after chairing an Umno Youth Exco meeting at Menara Dato Onn here Monday, when asked to comment on the announcement of BAM yesterday to set up a special committee headed by its deputy president Datuk Norza Zakaria to assist the defence of the player who was found to have failed a doping test recently.

This followed local media reports which alleged that a leading Malaysian badminton player failed a random doping test at the World Badminton Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark in August.

Khairy said: "The special committee should be formed as we have been informed that on Nov 4 or 5, the second sample test will be conducted. If the result is negative, there will be no problems. But it's just that by having the committee, we will know in greater detail what took place.

"It is very important for us to start investigating and preparing if the second test turns out positive, so that we can appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) and the process requires a special committee from BAM and KBS."

Norza yesterday confirmed that a banned substance taken by the athlete involved was dexamethasone, a type of pain killer for injuries he had sustained.

Asked on the possibility of the ministry instituting internal punishment in future as a deterrent to athletes on using banned substances, Khairy said the measure was not necessary.

"Whoever fails a doping test will be suspended automatically for two years. For me, that is heavier than whatever internal action," he added.

Commenting on the decision of Sports Commissioner Ahmad Shapawi Ismail in suspending the registration of the Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF) as reported by the media yesterday, Khairy said the association had 30 days to file its appeal.

On the achievement of the national contingent at the Asian Para Games 2014 in Incheon, South Korea recently, Khairy said he would be meeting chef de mission Datuk Ab Jalil Abdullah, the contingent and the sports associations involved tomorrow for a post-mortem.

At the games, the national paralympic athletes shocked observers with their extraordinary effort by delivery 15 gold, 20 silver and 27 bronze medals.

Rajagobal Let Off The Hook

PETALING JAYA, April 24 (Bernama) -- National head coach Datuk K. Rajagobal was let off the hook by the Football Association of Malaysia's (FAM) Disciplinary Committee after finding no evidence that he had violated FAM's Article 88, as claimed.
