KUALA LUMPUR: The Youth and Sports Ministry is investigating the course of treatment administered to a national athlete who subsequently failed a doping test.

Its minister Khairy Jamaluddin declined to reveal the athlete’s name until further tests confirm the presence of the banned drug.

“We have sought experts’ advice and discussed with doping specialists to see what could be the next steps. We are still gathering the facts,” he said.

Khairy told The Star yesterday when asked to comment on a report in StarSport of a national athlete who had failed a random test conducted during a major tournament.

The minister said he first knew about the matter on Oct 2 when an international federation informed the national association affiliated to it here about the athlete failing the drug test.

Khairy said the banned substance found in the A sample taken is normally administered during an athlete’s rehabilitation.

Once informed, he said he immediately set up an ad hoc team to investigate the matter. The team is headed by National Sports Institute (NSI) chief executive officer Datuk Dr Ramlan Aziz.

“The team looked into the details of the banned substance. We want to know what is the dosage used for the athlete or how it was administered,” said Khairy.

Rajagobal Let Off The Hook

PETALING JAYA, April 24 (Bernama) -- National head coach Datuk K. Rajagobal was let off the hook by the Football Association of Malaysia's (FAM) Disciplinary Committee after finding no evidence that he had violated FAM's Article 88, as claimed.
