Young Woman Shuttler Sacrifices Beloved Sport To Concentrate On Studies

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 28 (Bernama) -- National shuttler Yang Li Lian has decided to sacrifice her beloved sport despite a bright prospect, to focus on her studies.

The 22-year-old women's singles player said she had to make the sacrifice to concentrate on her studies because her form has not been up to the mark lately.

"I will pursue my A-level in a private university. Maybe I might try my luck in another prospect. I have been in the National squad for about three years but my performance has not been very good," she told reporters.

Li Lian who is ranked 57 in the world had submitted a letter stating her intention to withdraw from the National squad, to the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), yesterday.

Meanwhile, National women's singles coach Wong Tat Meng when contacted by Bernama said Li Lian still had a chance to improve her potential since she has no injuries and was still active and fit.

"I and BAM respect her (Li Lian) decision and wish her success in her future although it is too early for her to retire despite her potential. After Wong Mew Choo, Julia Wong, Lydia Cheah, there are no competitive women players," he said.

The likes of Tee Jing Yi and Sonia Cheah have yet to achieve international success at a high level.

Tat Meng said the women squad was currently preparing for the Sudirman Cup in May and the SEA Games in Singapore in June.

Rajagobal Let Off The Hook

PETALING JAYA, April 24 (Bernama) -- National head coach Datuk K. Rajagobal was let off the hook by the Football Association of Malaysia's (FAM) Disciplinary Committee after finding no evidence that he had violated FAM's Article 88, as claimed.
