MNCF Urged To Be Careful When Handling Internal Crisis - NSC

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 12 (Bernama) -- The National Sports Council (NSC) has warned the Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF) to be careful with any kind of action revolving the internal crisis in the federation.

NSC director-general Datuk Ahmad Shapawi Ismail said though the suspension order on MNCF had been withdrawn by the Sports Commissioner's office on Jan 26, the federation remains in the radar of the Youth and Sports Ministry and Sports Commissioner.

"The MNCF had been warned to be careful with their financial management and procedures. I hope the current crisis will not force the Minister to take any action," he told reporters after tabling a New Sports Module, here today.

Shapawi said the latest crisis was between MNCF and National track cycling coach John Beasley of Australia over an unpaid amount of RM21,000.

Last October, the MNCF was suspended by the Sports Commissioner after failing to submit a reasonable reply to a show-cause letter for over spending funds allocated by the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

The ban was however, lifted on Jan 26, this year after the Youth and Sports Minister and the Sports Commissioner were satisfied with steps taken by the MNCF to rectify the situation and resolve irregularities in their procedures for expenditure.

As for the recent claim by Beasley that MNCF owed him RM21,000, MNCF deputy president Datuk Naim Mohamad said he would seek clarification from National Track Cycling coach John Beasley in relation to his claim that the federation owed him RM21,000.

Naim said he was not aware of any amount owed by the MNCF to Beasley because all money owed to him had been settled in 2012, namely an additional RM12,000 that was incurred by the National track cycling team that competed in the World Cup in Astana, Kazakhstan and Colombia.

"I will contact John to find out details about the RM21,000 said to be owed by MNCF. If we really owe him then we need to settle the amount. But to my knowledge the issue of payment had been settled but now the issue is back.

"If there was any outstanding amount, I am not aware of it," he told Bernama when contacted yesterday to comment on reports claiming that the MNCF owed Beasley RM21,000.

Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin today urged Shapawi to be the mediator to resolve the current issue between MNCF and Beasley.

MNCF President Datuk Abu Samah Abd Wahab who is currently in Korat, Thailand for the Asian Cycling Championships (ACC) is expected to return on Sunday while Beasley is reported to be in Paris, France to prepare National rack cyclists for the World Cup.

Naim said MNCF would hold an exco meeting on Tuesday to try and resolve the issue.
