KUANTAN, March 23 (Bernama) -- From next year, the Football
Association of Malaysia (FAM) will introduce a semi-professional referee
system to attract the younger generation to be involved in the field.
FAM president Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah said a complete working paper would be put up with inputs from the International Football Federation (FIFA) to ensure its implementation.
"It is an effort by FAM to attract the younger generation to take up refereeing as a career.
"Just like a career as a football player was getting more widespread, we will also like to create a similar atmosphere among referees," he told reporters after opening an FAM-FIFA Football Referee Seminar here today.
Present were FIFA chief referee, Massimo Busacca and FAM Referee's Committee chairman, Goh Ah Chai.
The four-day seminar is attended by 50 participants, including 22 assistant referees from all over the country.
Through the scheme, Tengku Abdullah hoped more referees from the country could be in action at international-level, including the 2018 World Cup in Russia and the 2015 Women's Football Cup in Canada.
