Nora powers to gold in Asian youth bowling meet

PETALING JAYA: Nora Lyana Nastasia completed a singles sweep for Malaysia by winning the girls’ event in the Asian Youth Tenpin Bowling Championships in Macau.

The 17-year-old registered a six-game series of 1,359 pinfalls to finish ahead of Joey Yap of Singapore (1,344) and Indonesian Alisha Nabila (1,308) at the Complexo Desportivo Internacional do COTAI bowling centre.

Earlier on Tuesday, Rafiq Ismail celebrated his 18th birthday by clinching the gold with a record 1,615 total.

Nora’s singles win was the first for Malaysian girls in 19 years. Shalin Zulkifli was the last winner in 1996 when Nora wasn’t even born yet.

“I’m over the moon. I competed in the championships two years ago, but came up short. I’m really happy to come back and win the gold,” said Nora.

The national youth bowler grabbed the lead after the third game with lines of 200-257-247. She kept the momentum going with a 226 total in the fourth game. But she was relegated to second place and four pins behind Yap after posting a 219 in game five. But Nora picked herself up in the final game by rolling down 210 pinfalls for a 15-pin win.

“I had no idea how the sixth game was progressing as Joey was bowling at the other end of the alley. I just told myself to keep all my shots on target. I’m glad I managed to end it well,” said Nora.
Malaysia were unlucky not to add another medal as both Nur Shazwani Sahar and Natasha Roslan were in the running for a bronze after the third and fourth games.

But they crumbled in the end with Shazwani finishing 10th with a 1,232 total while Natasha was placed 14th with 1,216 pinfalls.

Nur Amirah Auni, the other Malaysian, was placed 12th with a 1,227 total.

Malaysia’s quest for a third medal continues on Thursday in the boys’ doubles. Rafiq will partner Qalif Adnor Adam while Christopher Tiong and Muhd Syafiq Sajeli will form the other pair.

Rajagobal Let Off The Hook
