‘Ramdan paling layak’

Footballing greats lament the state of national game

National footballing icons Santokh Singh (back row left) with Shukor Salleh (back row second from left) and Soh Chin Aun (back row right) were at the launch of the Milo Hidup Bola futsal tournament in KL on Tuesday. - BERNAMA PETALING JAYA: Play for the pride of the country – and not the money! That’s the view of former great Datuk Santokh Singh when asked about the declining standard of Malaysian football. His scathing remarks certainly hold water as the national team continue to flounder on the international arena, with their world ranking now at a lowly 142 from a one-time high of No. 73 in the 1993. This, he said, is shambolic considering that Malaysia used to be a powerhouse in Asia back in the 70s and 80s. Malaysia’s latest debacle came on Sunday when they could only draw 0-0 with the Philippines in a friendly in Cebu. For a nation who used to beat the likes of the mighty Japan, South Korea and Kuwait, to name a few, the dra

Khairy gesa tingkat mutu skuad kebangsaan

Hockey coach Dharmaraj denies infighting

Malaysia lost 1-3 to South Korea in the Champions Challenge I group match. – Bernama Photo KUANTAN: Something is amiss with the national hockey team. They came into the Champions Challenge I with high hopes and a lofty target of winning the title. A late selection process (the management only named their final 18 players hours before the team managers’ meeting on Friday) was thought to be due to the many options they had to choose from. Things were promising as the team gave some inspired performances in the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup last month, finishing as runners-up to Australia. Surprisingly, the team put up a disjointed and uninspiring show here in Kuantan. They were beaten in both their Group B matches. Malaysia lost 2-3 to France on Saturday and then 1-3 to South Korea on Sunday. They have one final group match on Tuesday against Canada. A defeat or draw means they will be playing top seeds New Zealand in the quarter-finals o

His opponent Zulfadli Zulkiffli did not show up, and Ramdan will take on Goh Soon Huat on April 29, 2014. KUALA LUMPUR: Former national champion Misbun Ramdan Misbun is just one step away from following in the footsteps of his famous father and uncles by going to the Thomas Cup Finals. On Monday, the 23-year-old Ramdan edged closer to the dream when his first opponent Zulfadli Zulkiffli failed to show up for the selection trials at the Juara Stadium in Bukit Kiara. It is learnt that former world junior champion Zulfadli, who injured his knee during the Malaysian Open Grand Prix Gold in Pasir Gudang, is still struggling to regain his form. Ramdan will take on Goh Soon Huat on Tuesday and the winner will join world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei, Chong Wei Feng and Liew Daren as the fourth member of th

Ramdan’s burning desire

LEGACY: Player wants to continue Sidek family’s Thomas Cup tradition MISBUN Ramdan Misbun’s dream is to continue the legacy of the Sidek family in the Thomas Cup. Regarded as one of the most promising local shuttlers, the World No 48 will play national player Goh Soon Huat in a special trial for a spot in the 10-member Thomas Cup squad at Juara Stadium in Bukit Jalil today. The winner of this match will join World No 1 Lee Chong Wei, Chong Wei Feng and Liew Daren along with six doubles players in the competition in New Delhi on May 18-25. Ramdan, the son of former national champion Misbun Sidek, was supposed to take on Zulfadli Zulkiffli yesterday with the winner playing Soon Huat but the former world junior champion did not show up. It is believed that the World No 59 has not recovered from an injury. Jangan mimpi!

“Tapi Piala Thomas memerlukan kekuatan seimbang semua acara. Pemain seperti Liew Daren, Chong Wei Feng, Misbun Ramdan (Misbun) dan yang lain sangat jauh prestasi mereka j

Coach shoots down disunity claims

NATIONAL chief coach K. Dharmaraj yesterday denied speculation that Malaysia were playing badly in the Champions Challenge I in Kuantan because of disunity due to his selection of players. Malaysia lost 3-2 to France and 3-1 to South Korea and will play Canada today, where a defeat will see them face tournament favourites New Zealand in the quarter-finals. “I agree the team have not been playing up to mark, and I have also heard from many people that the cause might be due to the selection of many Junior World Cup players (eight) and that I have favoured certain players over others who were dropped. “But there is no truth in this because I have selected the best available and I am trying out new positions for several players and that is why the team look disjointed and unsettled after two matches. “I was also a player once, and I will never bring favouritism into selecting players as I know it causes pain to those who are not selected,” said Dharmaraj.

Wasteful Malaysia

INTERNATIONAL FRIENDLY: Safee squanders stoppage-time penalty SAFEE Sali had a stoppage-time penalty saved as Malaysia were held to a 0-0 draw by the Philippines in a friendly match of few clear-cut chances at the Cebu City Sports Centre yesterday. The penalty was given despite the Philippines captain Anton Del Rosario appeared to handle the ball outside the box but goalkeeper Patrick Deyto brilliantly denied Safee with a full-length dive to his left. The result is the fourth consecutive time Malaysia and Philippines have played to a draw since 2012. National caretaker coach Ong Kim Swee handed Junior Eldstal his first senior international cap as Azamuddin Akil, Baddrol Bakhtiar, Bunyamin Umar, Fadhli Shas and Norfarhan Muhammad joined the Sarawak midfielder in starting for the national team for the first time in 2014. Playing on an uneven surface hardly fit for international football, Malaysia almost scored an own goal when defending a corner in the 14th

Harimau lemau

It was their second defeat in a row for Malaysia after their 2-3 loss to France on Saturday. The Malaysians were sloppy in defence and also allowed the Koreans too much room to attack. Their overall performance was also not up to mark and they wasted five penalty corners. South Korea, on six points, went to the top of the group on a better goal difference than second-placed Canada. Malaysia went into the match knowing they needed a win to keep alive their hopes of a top-two placing in the group. Likewise, the Koreans were also desperate for full points after a 3-3 draw with Canada in their opening match. Malaysia managed to
