Misbun: Chong Wei must learn to say no to some outside activities

PETALING JAYA: The next few weeks will be crucial to world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei as he steps up his preparations for the world championships, which will be held in Hyderabad from Aug 10-16.

And coach Misbun Sidek hopes that Chong Wei will politely say no to some invitations for outside activities that could distract his focus on training.

The Penangite has been invited by many to attend their functions and talks. And Misbun said that it was normal for a player of Chong Weiā€™s reputation to be in demand.

ā€œHe has to say no to some people sometimes in a nice way. Itā€™s not easy for him to do this because he is an icon now.

ā€œPeople may misconstrue ā€˜noā€™ as arrogance,ā€ said Misbun.

ā€œBut if it is said politely, people will understand. It is important for Chong Wei to devote his time to his preparations for the world championships.ā€

Chong Wei will compete in the championships as the top seed and Misbun said that it was important for him to handle his emotions well.

ā€œBeing tagged as a favourite in the world championships can do good and also harm to a player. It is important to stay calm through it all,ā€ he said.

On Sunday, Chong Wei won his fourth Open title this year at the Malaysian Open Grand Prix Gold in Johor Baru after successes in the Super Series tournaments in Malaysia, Switzerland and Indonesia.

Ex-coach's jail sentence cut to a year

PUTRAJAYA: The Court of Appeal yesterday sentenced former athletics coach C. Ramanathan to 12 months' jail for molesting two junior athletes 19 years ago. A three-man bench led by Datuk Mohd Hishamudin Mohd Yunus unanimously dismissed Ramanathan's appeal against conviction, but varied the jail sentence of four years to a year, which was to run concurrently. Following yesterday's ruling, Ramanathan, 75, a former teacher, walked out a free man as he had served 10 months in Kajang Prison. Convicts get one-third remission for good behaviour while in prison. However, he will lose his pension. Hishamudin, who sat with Datuk Abdul Wahab Patail and Datuk Linton Albert, said the court found no merit to overturn the conviction. "However, in reducing the sentence, we considered Ramanathan's age and the long years the appeal has taken." Deputy public prosecutor Awang Armadajaya Awang Mahmud submitted that then High Court judge Tan Sri Abdull Hamid E...
