Pelari Kenya warnai KL Marathon 2009

KUALA LUMPUR - Seperti biasa, pelari Kenya terus menguasai kebanyakan kejohanan maraton yang diadakan di negara ini.

Terbaru, Kejohanan Standard Chartered KL Marathon 2009 yang menawarkan hadiah wang tunai lebih AS$96,500 (RM340,838.85) dikuasai oleh Julius Kilimo Kipkorir, 29, dengan mencatatkan masa 2 jam 17 minit dan 2 saat.

Diikuti dua lagi rakan senegaranya di tempat kedua dan ketiga, Nelson Kirwa Rotich, 28, dan Armon Kipchirchir, 24, masing-masing melakukan catatan 2'18.24s dan 2'18.55s pada kejohanan itu.

Untuk kemenangan itu, Kipkorir menerima cek bernilai RM70,694 manakala rakan-rakannya Kirwa Rotich dan Kipchirchir masing-masing menerima RM28,277.60 dan RM17,673.50 daripada isteri Perdana Menteri, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor.

Kipkorir yang buat pertama kalinya melibatkan diri dalam acara marathon penuh itu masih tidak percaya dengan kemenangannya itu.

''Sebelum ini, saya hanya mengambil bahagian dalam acara separa maraton iaitu 21 kilometer.

''Saya memulakan latihan bagi maraton ini sejak tiga bulan lalu dan tidak percaya bahawa dapat bersaing dengan pelari handalan maraton yang lain,'' katanya.

Dalam pada itu, marathon penuh bagi warga tempatan pula dijuarai oleh Muniandy Ramadass dengan catatan masa 2'31.52s.

Tempat kedua dan kedua pula masing-masing dimenangi oleh Shaharudin Hashim dan Jayakumar Ramasamy dengan masa catatan 2'39.52s dan 2'46.19s.

Sementara itu, putera dan puteri Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin iaitu Tengku Nadhirah Zaharah, Tengku Muhammad Mua'az, dan Tengku Fatimatuz Zahra', turut serta mengambil bahagian dalam larian itu.

Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin dan Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Nur Zahirah turut berangkat untuk memberi sokongan kepada ketiga-tiga anakanda baginda.

Kejohanan kategori utama sejauh 42 kilometer yang bermula di Dataran Merdeka itu disertai oleh 12,500 peserta yang turut mempertandingkan acara separa maraton, 10km, 5km, Family & Fun Run serta Kids Dash.
