KUALA LUMPUR: National singles chief coach Rashid Sidek will be out to make a point at the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) coaching and training committee meeting today although the main agenda will be on the doubles department headed by Rexy Mainaky.
Rashid said yesterday that he would propose to the BAM to appoint a national coaching director to monitor the coaches’ performance.
Currently, the BAM have two chief coaches – one for the singles (Rashid) and the other for the doubles (Rexy).
Both coaches are monitored by acting coaching coordinator Kenny Goh.
Kenny is also the general manager of BAM and is often swamped with managerial and administrative work.
“It will be better to have a coaching director. Kenny does come around the court once or twice a week to get feedback from Rexy and me,” said Rashid.
“Perhaps it will be better to have someone who is knowledgeable about the game to monitor how we implement our programme on a more regular basis. I will bring this up at the meeting tomorrow (today).
“The management seem to be unhappy with our work. Maybe, the BAM will be able to assess us better if there is someone on the ground on a daily basis communicating with us.”
Rashid also lamented on the untimely pressure exerted on the chief coaches, saying it was better for all parties in BAM to work together — especially with the Thomas Cup Finals looming in May.
“The coaches should not be the only one to take the heat – especially ahead of the Finals. Instead, all parties should work together,” he said, in response to BAM president Datuk Nadzmi Mohd Salleh’s statement on Friday that the performance of all the coaches would be reviewed based on the outcome of the Thomas Cup Finals.
Today’s committee meeting will also review Rexy’s plans for the doubles players and on the role of newly-recruited coach Tan Kim Her.
Rexy, who has delegated the coaching duties among this assistants, is hoping that the committee will endorse his decision to allow Kim Her to handle three back-up pairs – Goh Wei Shem-Teo Kok Siang, Vountus Indra Mawan-Mohd Lutfi Zaim Abdul Khalid and Pang Zheng Lin-Chooi Kah Ming.
