Squash: Nicol Sets Up Semifinal Clash With Waters

PETALING JAYA, July 22 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's worlds No. 1 women's squash player Datuk Nicol Ann David advanced to the semi-finals of the 2010 CIMB Malaysian Open Squash Championships after outclassing Camille Serme of France at The Curve shopping mall, here, Thursday night.

Nicol took only 29 minutes to win the quarter-final match in 11-4, 11-4 and 11-9.

"I just want to start off well as she (Camille) had nothing to lose. It was her first time playing in the glass court and get used to it but at the same time I did not to get in her game," said the 26-year-old Nicol, who is gunning for her sixth consecutive title.

Nicol will be meeting Alison Waters of England in tomorrow's semifinals.

"I played her for so many times and we had some good matches. Tomorrow, I have to really bring my game up. She will be throwing everything out there and will bring in my game as well," said Nicol on tomorrow's semifinal match.

Alison had earlier defeated fifth seed, Omneya Abdel Kawy in 11-5, 11-3, 3-11 and 11-4 in a match that lasted 36 minutes.

"I've played Omneya many times before. We have had some good battles in the past. I am pleased that I had a good game today. I'm looking foward for tomorrow's match," said Alison.

In the men's category, Mohamed El Shorbagy and his country mate, Tarek Momen will set up an the all-Egyptian semifinals tomorrow.

The tournament's top seed, Mohamed disposed off Malaysia's Ong Beng Hee while Tarek had earlier defeated Australia's Stewart Boswell.

In the Mohamed-Beng Hee quarterfinal match, Beng Hee was forced to play a four-setter before losing to his opponent 11-7, 8-11, 9-11 and 10-12 in a gruelling match that lasted an hour and 21 minutes.

Their quarterfinal match had to be stopped for a few minutes during the third set when Beng Hee had a cut on his lip due to a collision.

"I played on and did the best I could. I wish I was a bit fitter. The back injury took my attention from the game.

"I'm still lucky to play till the end. He deserved to win. However, I'm disappointed. I've trained hard for the last five to six days (for this competition). Everything ended up in a collision...so, what to do," said Beng Hee.

Tarek, in another quarter-final match, defeated Boswell in five-sets of 7-11, 10-12, 11-8, 11-3 and 11-5.
