KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 23 (Bernama) -- World number one Datuk Lee Chong Wei set up a date with compatriot Muhammad Hafiz Hashim in the second round of the Yonex-BWF World Championships men's singles after strolling past his first round opponent at the Pierre de Coubertin Stadium in Paris, France on Monday.
Chong Wei made quick work of Kevin Cordon of Guatemala 21-7, 21-11, while Hafiz disposed Tan Yuhan of Belgium 21-13, 21-15 to set up an exciting all-Malaysian affair on Wednesday.
On paper Chong Wei has the advantage over Hafiz, owing to the fact that Hafiz had only won twice out of seven meetings since 2005.
Meanwhile, in the women singles, Malaysian Wong Mew Chew would face Ella Diehl of Russia on Wednesday, after defeating Karin Schnaase of Germany 21-16, 21-14 in the first round on Monday.
In the doubles, Malaysian mixed doubles pair Peng Soon Chan/Liu Ying Goh outclassed Jonathan Gillis/Severine Corvilain of Belgium 21-12, 21-14 to advance to the second round.
However, seasoned campaigners Choong Tan Fook/Lee Wan Wah were shown an early exit by German pair Kristof Hopp/Johannes Schottler 20-22, 21-17, 18-21.
Other Malaysian shuttlers in the competition, world number one men's doubles pair Koo Kien Keat/Tan Boon Heong, junior pair Gan Teik Chai/Tan Bin Shen and women's singles player Lydia Cheah would begin their campaign Tuesday.
