KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 24 (Bernama) -- National men's singles player Wong Choong Hann followed in the footsteps of compatriots Datuk Lee Chong Wei and Muhammad Hafiz Hashim to advance into the second round of the 2010 Yonex-BWF World Championships after beating his first round opponent at the Pierre de Coubertin Stadium in Paris on Tuesday.
The 33-year-old took almost 50 minutes to overcome French player Simon Maunory in 21-18, 10-21, 21-17.
However, the Malaysian mixed doubles pair of Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying were shown the exit after losing to Indian pair Valiyaveetil Diju/Jwala Gutta in 19-21, 8-21.
National women's singles player Lydia Cheah and doubles pair Koo Kien Keat/Tan Boon Heong will see first round action early Wednesday.
Meanwhile, in PUTRAJAYA, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek said he hoped the national players would do well at the prestigious tournament.
"All England we have already won...now is the turn for the World Championships. Besides these, there are also the Olympics, Asians Games and Commonwealth Games," he told reporters after receiving a courtesy call from Union Cycliste Internationale president Pat Macquaid at his office Tuesday.
