KUALA LUMPUR, June 28 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's dream of qualifying for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil is not impossible although the country is ranked 143rd in the FIFA World ranking.
Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek said the dream can become a reality if the national squad under Datuk K. Rajagobal can perform well in the first match and maintain the consistency in following matches.
Ahmad Shabery said the confidence and hope placed on the national squad by the entire nation should be a driving force and inspiration for the squad to score a win against their opponent in their first round of the Asia Zone World Cup Qualifier.
Malaysia will play Taiwan in the first leg at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil tomorrow before travelling to Taipei for the return leg on July 3.
"The solid support from Malaysian fans is clearly evident because Malaysians of all ages are seen wearing the national jersey and supporting the national team, including the Olympic squad during matches.
"The Harimau Malaya squad must also emulate the victory of the Olympic squad who beat Lebanon in their second round Olympic qualifying match, as an inspiration to achieve a win of their own," he told reporters here today.
Ahmad Shabery said Malaysia has gained its reputation as a powerhouse in South East Asia after wining the AFF Suzuki Cup last year.
"My prediction is for Malaysia to beat Taiwan 3-0 tomorrow," he said.
