KUALA LUMPUR, June 26 (Bernama) -- Malaysian Amateur Karate Federation (MAKAF) president Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam has denied imposing restrictions on all athletes and coaches in the national squad from issuing any statements on the team.
He claimed that the coaches or athletes in the team could still give statements on their performance in a tournament as long as they were consistent with the policies of the federation.
"They just cannot give comments on selection of athletes made by MAKAF, issues that can lead to internal strife and administrative issues," he told Bernama after closing the National Schools Karate Championship at Kuala Lumpur Badminton Stadium in Cheras here Sunday.
Mohd Ali, who is also Melaka Chief Minister, claimed that the restrictions were imposed to protect the good name of the federation.
Prior to this, MAKAF had issued a statement that only the president could issue comments on matters related to the federation.
Meanwhile, national Karate coach P. Arivalagan said the Asian Karate Championship in Hong Kong next month serve as the platform to select the members of the national team for the SEA Games in Indonesia in November.
"Of the 40 or so exponents who will be competing in Hong Kong, only 20 or 21 will be selected to join the SEA Games Squad," he told Bernama on the sidelines of the National Schools Karate Championship.
The Hong Kong championship will be held from July 18-24.
