KUALA LUMPUR, June 25 (Bernama) -- After winning the Hong Kong Marathon in February, Kenyan marathon ace Nelson Kirwa Rotich has set his sights on defending the Standard Chartered KL Marathon title on Sunday at Dataran Merdeka.
The 30-year old Kenyan however, admitted that tomorrow's race was going to be more challenging than the Hong Kong marathon because of the hot and humid weather here.
"That is what makes the KL Marathon unique from other marathons. The hot weather and the humidity provides a major challenge for the runners' endurance," he said during a media conference here Saturday.
Nelson, who was also the defending champion in the full marathon category, would run alongside 22,000 other participants including Malaysia's own marathon ace Shaharudin Hashim, Malaysia Games gold medallist J. Karthik and Kenyan blind marathon runner Henry Wanyoike with his guiding partner Joseph Kibunja.
The event which would begin as early as 5am Sunday morning, offers US$100,000 in total prize money for the five categories contested, namely full marathon (42.2km), half marathon (21.2km), 10km, 5km Fun Run and Kids Dash (3km-950m).
