Golf: Just An Average Outing For Malaysian Pros

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 27 (Bernama) -- It was just an average outing for two Malaysian professional golfers in the opening round of the CIMB Asia Pacific Classic, which was held at The Mines Resort and Golf Club in Seri Kembangan, near here.

After completing today's first round, Malaysia's top ranked player, Danny Chia shared 33rd position after posting an even-par 71, while Shaaban Hussin was in joint 41st position with a one-over-par 72.

"Obviously, I am not not satisfied. I would have been happier if I did not mess up on those two holes," said the 39-year-old Chia, when met at the competition venue Thursday.

In his first-nine, Chia dropped a double-bogey at par-4 fourth hole and later a triple-bogey in the next hole but managed to recover with three birdies on the sixth, seventh and ninth holes.

"I need to stop making triple and double bogeys! If you hit the ball good on this course, you will have a lot of birdies. I may have a different strategy on the tee box," said Chia, adding that he was too aggressive with his tee shots. He noted that he was nervous in the beginning because he did not know what to expect.

"In fact, I lost concentration for the first few holes but managed to play well throughout the round," said Chia.

Meanwhile Shaaban, who is making his second appearance in this competition, struggled at the beginning of his game.

"I missed a lot of greens. Luckily, my putting was good and if not it would be a five or six-over scores. I got back my rhythm on the second nine and fought back with a two-under," said Shaaban.

The 31-year-old from Alor Star, Kedah, dropped three bogeys in his first nine and recovered with two birdies at the 14th and 17th holes.

"It is a good start for me because I fought back from being three-over and that's given me some confidence. Hopefully, I don't finish last again," he said.

Rajagobal Let Off The Hook

PETALING JAYA, April 24 (Bernama) -- National head coach Datuk K. Rajagobal was let off the hook by the Football Association of Malaysia's (FAM) Disciplinary Committee after finding no evidence that he had violated FAM's Article 88, as claimed. FAM Disciplinary Committee chairman Datuk Taufik Abdul Razak said the committee had decided not to charge Rajagobal after carefully analysing the video of the post-match press conference by the 56-year-old coach. "After listening to the recording of the post-match press conference, we decided to drop the charge against Rajagopal as he did not make such a statement. "Maybe his (Rajagobal) assessment and comments of the match was misconstrued by the media. There was no mention of the FAM policy throughout his comments," said Taufik after emerging from a three-hour Disciplinary Committee meeting at Wisma FAM in Kelana Jaya, here, Wednesday. Rajagobal who does not mince his words when asked to com...

Ex-coach's jail sentence cut to a year

PUTRAJAYA: The Court of Appeal yesterday sentenced former athletics coach C. Ramanathan to 12 months' jail for molesting two junior athletes 19 years ago. A three-man bench led by Datuk Mohd Hishamudin Mohd Yunus unanimously dismissed Ramanathan's appeal against conviction, but varied the jail sentence of four years to a year, which was to run concurrently. Following yesterday's ruling, Ramanathan, 75, a former teacher, walked out a free man as he had served 10 months in Kajang Prison. Convicts get one-third remission for good behaviour while in prison. However, he will lose his pension. Hishamudin, who sat with Datuk Abdul Wahab Patail and Datuk Linton Albert, said the court found no merit to overturn the conviction. "However, in reducing the sentence, we considered Ramanathan's age and the long years the appeal has taken." Deputy public prosecutor Awang Armadajaya Awang Mahmud submitted that then High Court judge Tan Sri Abdull Hamid E...
