FAM vice president Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin said the independent body would be set up after discussions with the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).
Hamidin said the Independent body was vital in efforts to see local teams competing in prestigious competitions like the AFC Champions League by 2016.
Based on AFC's requirement, any team from Asian countries that wished to participate in the AFC Champions Cup must have participated in a professional league governed by an Independent body that is not answerable to the national body.
"The FAM secretariat will write a letter to the AFC soon to receive feedback on the setting up of the Independent body, just like what a number of football powers in Asia have done," he told reporters after a seminar for the 2013-2016 M-League season, here Sunday.
